Dogs are social animals - the more you expose them to, the more comfortable they become.  Socialization is especially important with puppies and newly rescued dogs.  Exposure to different sizes, breeds, and play styles will help them learn how to properly interact with other dogs.

FREE Puppy and Rescue Dog

Socialization Groups!!

Congratulations on this exciting time and adventure with your new dog.  Now, let’s get to work to ensure you build a solid foundation for your new family member.  From 8 to 12 weeks of age, puppies go through a fear imprinting stage. During this time, it is crucial to carefully introduce a pup to a variety of stimuli every day, and to ensure that the experiences are positive. This is also a good time to start training the pup in basic behaviors.  Rescue dogs also need proper socialization that may have been stunted while in less-than-ideal home situations.  But all of the work does not have to be hard!  Playtime can be a great way to work on your new dogs social development with you, other people and dogs.

Dog Paws n Cat Claws (DPnCC) is excited to announce that we will be hosting a Socialization Class at our own 7,000 sq ft doggie daycare, boarding, training and grooming facility.  We will be breaking the groups up into one puppy area and one rescue dog area and will be held on the second Saturday of each month beginning November, 2011.  Please be sure to register for this event before you arrive.

DPnCC is hosting the events FREE of charge but we do hope you consider a tax-deductible donation to benefit our local, Arlington animal rescue group, Homeward Trails.  100% of the proceeds go directly to Homeward Trails to help find a pet a great home.

Acceptable donations include:

- crates                                             - leashes/collars

- canned pet food                            - litter and/or litter boxes

- beds (good condition)                   - pet supplies in good condition

- monetary donation

Why socialize your dog?

* It is essential to introduce your pup to a variety of stimuli every day in a positive manner.

*The most common cause of unprovoked dog aggression is lack of proper socialization.

*Exposing a puppy or new dog to other friendly dogs is the best way to teach essential social skills

*As pack animals and social beings, dogs need interaction with their owners, other people and other animals.  The more you isolate the dog, and the less you interact with the dog, the more likely she will develop negative behaviors.

*Get a chance to learn the body language of your dog and other dogs.  This is a great signal of how dogs are feeling and can help prevent unwanted behaviors.  For example, a wagging tail and relaxed posture are more welcoming signs than raised hackles, erect tails and staring. If you sense any tension, practice redirecting attention or pick up your young pup and prevent the animals from having unwanted eye contact.
